Facebook Security Best Practices

Introduction

ID fraudsters target Facebook and other social networking sites to harvest information about you. Here's how we recommend you set your Facebook privacy options to protect against online identity theft.

How to adjust your settings
This guide walks you through Sophos-recommended privacy settings in Facebook, and shows you how to set more secure levels of privacy and reduce the chance of becoming a victim of online identity theft.
General security tips for Facebook

Adjust Facebook privacy settings to help protect your identity
Unlike some other social networking sites, Facebook provides some powerful options to protect you online — but it's up to you to use them!

Read the Facebook Guide to Privacy
At the very bottom of every page on Facebook, there's a link that reads "Privacy." The linked page is "A guide to privacy on Facebook," which contains the latest privacy functions and policies. For example, with the latest changes in May 2010, Facebook discloses information that it sets as visible to everyone and that you cannot make private. This information includes sensitive information like your name, profile picture, gender and networks.

When in doubt, use the "Preview my profile" button on any privacy settings page to check how your information appears to others.

Think carefully about who you allow to become your friend
Once you have accepted someone as your friend they will be able to access any information about you (including photographs) that you have marked as viewable by your friends. You can remove friends at any time should you change your mind about someone.

Show "limited friends" a cut-down version of your profile
You can choose to make people 'limited friends' who only have access to a cut-down version of your profile if you wish. This can be useful if you have associates who you do not wish to give full friend status to, or feel uncomfortable sharing personal information with.

Disable options, then open them one by one
Think about how you want to use Facebook. If it's only to keep in touch with people and be able to contact them then maybe it's better to turn off the bells and whistles. It makes a lot of sense to disable an option until you have decided you do want and need it, rather than start with everything accessible.

Top 12 Good Health Tips for Men

I am now going to engage in the popular game of constructing a list — in this case, of the most important choices for staying sound in body and mind for years to come.

And since we are dealing with the game of life, I am taking this game very seriously. Obviously, there is no scientific way to prove that these are the 12 most important health practices for all men — or that I have ranked them in the right order. But I think that I can make a pretty good case for both the list and the order.

At the very least, it will be good way of summarizing what I feel are some of the most important health messages to come out of my new book, Dr. Timothy Johnson's OnCall Guide to Men's Health, which help give men of all ages a strategy for staying fit and well.

As you will see, I have cheated a little by combining two items in some cases. And I have chosen both screening tests and preventative practices for the list. But every item shares this one dynamic: They are all under your control. So here goes.

The Top 12 :

1) Don't smoke. Smoking is estimated to kill 400,000 Americans every single year. That's the equivalent death toll of three jumbo jet crashes every single day! Choosing not to smoke is, without a doubt, the single most important health decision you can make.

2) Control your weight. This is not as easy a No. 2 choice for me as was No. 1. That's because the connection between obesity and actual illnesses or deaths is often more indirect than is the case with smoking. But I have come to accept the estimates of the Surgeon General's Office that obesity is responsible for approximately 350,000 deaths every year, and that if American men continue to stop smoking in large numbers, it may even replace smoking as the No. 1 cause of death for men.

3) Drink alcohol in moderation. This message can be taken in both positive and negative terms. Truly moderate drinking (one to two standard size drinks per day) does reduce the risk of coronary artery disease, the No. 1 cause of death in our country. However, excessive drinking is a major cause of both physical disease and social tragedy. Approximately 10 percent of people who start drinking socially will become alcoholics. The decision to drink even socially should not be taken lightly.

4) Exercise regularly. This health practice has enormous physical and emotional benefits. Besides reducing the risk for high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis, regular exercise can be helpful in raising our general mood and reducing the risk for depression.

5) Have regular cholesterol and blood pressure tests. Both high cholesterol and high blood pressure can be described as "silent killers," since they can cause extensive damage to our heart and arteries without producing any telltale symptoms until it is often too late. Therefore, the only way to find out if you have a potential problem is to get tested.

6) Have regular colonoscopy and prostate serum antigen testing. I strongly believe in the value of both of these tests in detecting two common and potentially lethal diseases — colon and prostate cancer — when they are still curable. There are not many cancers that we can either prevent of detect early enough to make a difference, but these are two.

7) Take a baby aspirin every day (for most men). Unless you are truly allergic to aspirin (very rare) or at high risk for gastrointestinal bleeding (not very common), this daily dose of aspirin is one of the most beneficial and simple things you can do. It acts to reduce the risk of clot formation in the arteries leading to your heart and brain, thereby reducing the risk of both heart attacks and strokes. And it probably acts in many other beneficial ways we don't yet fully understand.

8) Practice safe sex. In this age of AIDS, you could make a good case for putting this higher on the list. But even less lethal sexually transmitted diseases can cause a wide range of disability, such as infertility problems and pelvic pain in women. And unless you are in a truly monogamous relationship, there is no good way to tell a partner is safe, so prevention using condoms is key.

9) Have regular glaucoma screenings. I put this on the list because glaucoma is a major cause of blindness and it usually doesn't produce visual symptoms until it has caused significant damage to the optic nerve. That's why eye doctors call it a "thief in the night." The other benefit of glaucoma screening is that your ophthalmologist will have the opportunity to check for other eye problems such as macular degeneration.

10) Use a sunscreen of at least 15 SPF. Skin cancers are the most common of all cancers by far. Fortunately, most of them (basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas) are rarely lethal, though they can certainly cause local disfigurement if not diagnosed early. Melanoma is both disfiguring and lethal, so it must be diagnosed as early as possible. But since it is so inconvenient to do a truly thorough check of the skin, at least by yourself, prevention is a very helpful tool. And that means the use of sunscreen and protective clothing and the avoidance of direct sun exposure between the "high hours" of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun is strongest.

11) Increase good fats and good carbs in your diet. Some of the standard nutritional advice of the past is undergoing change. And this is particularly true in the growing emphasis on making a distinction between good fats and carbs — such as omega-3 fatty acids and whole grains, which should actually be increased in our diet — and bad fats and carbs, such as saturated fats and highly refined grains, which of course should be decreased. In other words, just "cutting down" on fats and carbs is not precise enough anymore.

12) Find time for some kind of meditation/relaxation practice. This goal is very flexible. It is more important to set aside some time for relaxation than it is to worry about a specific relaxation technique. Even physical activity that is "relaxing" in the sense that it gets your mind away from stressful thoughts can be helpful. All of us should take the time to "get away" mentally and emotionally at least once a day, wherever we are, or whatever we are doing.

Top 1 SEO Tips & Tricks for 2013

If we’ve learned anything in 2012, it’s that Google isn’t letting up on low-value tactics. We’ve had the Penguin update, 13 Panda updates (so many that we needed a new naming scheme), and a crackdown on low-qualityExact Match Domains (EMDs), to name just a few. While I can’t tell you Google’s next move, I can tell you one thing with absolute certainty – there’s more to come. So, how can you protect what you’ve built in 2013?
I was going to write a long list of suggestions, but I realized that they almost all boiled down to just one idea. I’m not going to toy with you – my top tip for 2013 SEO is this.
If at any point in 2012 you asked “What’s the best [X] for SEO?” (link-building tactic, tag, directory, etc.), you’re already in trouble. Any single-tactic approach is short-term at best. Real companies, real link profiles, and real marketing are rich with variety.
So, what does that mean, practically? I’m going to cheat a bit and split my one tip into five kinds of diversity that I think are critical to your SEO success in the coming years.

Diversify Anchor Text :

Let’s start with an easy one. We’ve all known for a while that overly aggressive inbound link anchor text was pushing the envelope, and the Penguin Update definitely reinforced that message. If every link to your site reads “buy best Viagra cheap Viagra today!”, it might as well read “spam spam spammity spam,” especially if it’s in a sentence like:

If you’re looking for the best price on the new iPad and iPad cases, thenbuy best Viagra cheap Viagra today! and get a free bag of Acai berries.

It’s not natural, and you know it. What’s the best way to make your anchor text seem “natural?” Stop obsessing over it. Yes, anchor text is a signal, but any solid link profile is going to naturally use relevant text and appear in the context of relevant text. If you want to tweak the text on some of your high-authority links, go for it, but I wouldn’t break out the spreadsheets in 2013.

Diversify Your Links :

Are guest posts the one true answer to all of life’s questions or are they a scourge on our fragile earth? To read the SEO blogosphere in 2012, it’s hard to tell. Any link-building tactic can be low quality, if you abuse it. The problem is that someone reads a tip about how guest posts make good links and then they run off and publish the same slapped-together junk on 15,000 sites. Then they wonder why their rankings dropped.
Nothing screams manual link-building like a profile that’s built with only one tactic, especially if that tactic is too easy. At best, you’re eventually going to be doomed to diminishing returns. So, take a hard look at where your links came from in 2012 and consider trying something new next year. Diversify your profile, and you’ll diversify your risk.

Diversify Traffic Sources :

There’s an 800-lb. Gorilla in the room, and we’re all writing more SEO blog posts to avoid talking about it. Most of us are far too dependent on Google for traffic. What would you do if something changed overnight? I know some of you will object  – “But ALL my tactics are white-hat and I follow the rules!” Assuming that you understood the rules 100% accurately and really followed them to the letter, what if they changed?
The more I follow the Algorithm, the more I realize that the changing search UI and feature landscape may be even more important than the core algorithm itself. What happens if your competitor suddenly gets site-links, or you’re #8 on a SERP that drops to only 7 results, or everyone gets video snippets and you have no videos, or your niche shifts to paid inclusion and you can’t afford to pay? Even if you’ve followed the rules, your traffic could drop on a moment’s notice.
You need to think beyond Google. I know it’s tough, and it’s going to take time and money, but if you’re dependent on Google for your livelihood, then your livelihood is at serious risk.

Diversify Your Marketing :

There’s been a very positive trend this year toward thinking about marketing much more broadly – not as a tactic to trick people into liking you, but as the natural extension of building a better mousetrap. I think this is at the heart of RCS (not to put words in Wil’s mouth) – if you do something amazing and you believe in it, everything you do is marketing. If you build crap and you know it’s crap, then marketing is sleight of hand that you hope to pull on the unsuspecting. You might score twenty bucks by stealing my wallet, but you’re not going to gain a customer for life.
Stop taking shortcuts and make a real resolution in 2013 to think hard about what you do and why it has value. If you understand your value proposition, content and marketing naturally flow out of that. Talk to people outside of the SEO and marketing teams. Find out what your company does that’s unique, exciting, and resonates with customers.

Diversify Your Point Of View :

I recently had the pleasure to finally see Michael Dorausch (a chiropractor and well-known figure in the local SEO community) speak. Dr. Mike arrived in Tampa for BlueGlassX and built his presentation from the ground up, using photography to tell stories about the neighborhood and local history. It's hard to explain in a few sentences, but what amazed me was just how many ideas for unique and original content he was able to find in less than 48 hours, just by having a fresh perspective and passion for the subject. I'd like to say I was inspired by the presentation, but to be totally honest, I think the emotion was embarrassment. I was embarrassed that he was able to generate so many ideas so quickly, just by coming at the problem with the right attitude.
In 2013, if you tell me your industry is "boring," be warned - I'm going to smack you. If you're bored by what you do, how do you think your prospects and customers will feel? Step out - have someone give you a tour of your office like you've never been there. Visit your home city like you're a tourist coming there for the first time. Get five regular people to walk through your website and try to buy something (if you don't have five normal friends, use a service like UserTesting.com). The New Year is the perfect time for a fresh perspective.

Happy Birthday, Erica! :

Ok, this has nothing to do with the post, but today is Erica McGillivray's birthday. If you don't know Erica, she's our Community Attaché here at SEOmoz. So, diversify your communications today and wish her a happy birthday.

The poem Sound and Sense by Alexander Pope

When I consider how my light is spent,
Ere half my days, in this dark world and wide,
And that one talent which is death to hide
Lodged with me useless, though my soul more bent
To serve therewith my Maker, and present
My true account, lest He returning chide,
"Doth God exact day-labour, light denied?"
I fondly ask; But patience, to prevent
That murmur, soon replies "God doth not need
Either man's work or his own gifts. Who best
Bear His mild yoke, they serve Him best. His state
Is kingly: thousands at His bidding speed
And post o'er land and ocean without rest;
They also serve who only stand and wait."

Top 5 Trends and Technologies in Software Development

In this ever-changing world of software development it’s extremely important to keep up with current technologies, methodologies and trends. It can easily get out of hand though - simply there’s not enough time for anyone to learn all new stuff, work and live a normal life simultaneously. Selection is thus the key, being smartly selective about new things to learn so we won’t miss important stuff but also keep ‘junk’ or unimportant trends out. I created this small and ever-incomplete list of things I feel we all should pay attention to and practice. Some items could be considered ‘old’ (read: more than a few months old) but still not grasped enough yet. Without further ado I present thee the list:
Learn and use a modern scripting language
it can be Ruby, Python, Groovyor TheNextBigShot coming along, it doesn’t really matter. What matters is having a quick and easy tool for anything at hand so we won’t have to fire up our java IDE for a simple script. Also (most of) these languages encourage good pracices and methods, changing our attitude towards programming and program design. Embracing these “wow, look how elegant and simple that is!” solutions also become expectations with time (because we’ll get used to the ease and convenience), thus we will be striving for elegance and quality - helping impoving all of our further designs and codes. Some writings on ruby for example:
Ruby’s class system
Ruby blocks and closures
Ruby method arguments
Learn thogoughly and embrace the philosophy of a modern version control system
Be it Git or Mercurial, but start using them. Right now. Embrace the paradigm shift that gave birth to these tools. If not at work then try any of these on a personal project. These tools fit better to a natural cycle of development than our old tools svn or cvs. Being distributed does not mean they can’t be used as a central company repo solution. They both encourage the concept of cheap local branching, keeping you safe by being able to revert any time (as traditional VCSes) and also keeping the central main repo clean of nitty-gritty details.
Be familiar with NoSQL solutions like MongoDB, CouchDB.
These beasts can be a real life-saver when traditional relational DBs reach their limits at scaling and performance. Both MongoDB and CouchDB are what’s called a ‘document-oriented database’ which means that instead of rigid schemas the structure of each row is taken into account - they don’t even have to have the same fields, etc. The concept of ‘row’ becomes the concept of ‘document’. JSON-like data structures, dynamic queries, efficient storage of binary data (like videos, images), mapreduce support account for their robust and easy use-cases.
Learn a functional language - or more than one.
It’s about the paradigm shift and philosophy again. The more things you see and use the more complete you repertoire will become. Object-oriented / imperative design is not the only one out there. Take a look at Erlang for starters, it’s easy to learn and with it you can dip your toe in the water, but for more serious stuff Haskell or OCaml is a must (I vote for Haskell though). I’d say learning a functional language is not an option anymore - it’s a must. Some problems can be solved in an insanely easy manner with a functional approach and for example Haskell can easily implement any mathematic definition or problem you’d be having a problem describing in any imperative language. Also GHC (The Glasgow Haskell Compiler) is a state of the art optimizing compiler, one of the best compiler available now. Of course Haskell is not only for scientists, many good libraries are coming out written in haskell. Also see Real world Haskellfor a nice intro. Erlang is well known for its fault tolerance, concurrency paradigms, hot-swappable code and exceptional networking support. Having such a tool at hand is always a bonus.
My solution to Project Euler’s first problem in erlang
Study agile methods and concepts.
Agile management is not only for managers. There’s a need for the whole team to have a good understanding about their own development and management process. Agile helps to standardize management and daily programmer work, enforcing a small, controllable devel/release/testing cycle and also encouraging good communication all across the team (actually agile just can’t work without good communicatiion!). Just look at the Agile manifesto. Some important derivatives and parts of agile methods:
TDD - Test Driven Development
Iteration-based development - deliver less but more frequently in well-defined short bursts
BDD - Behavior Driven Development
XP - Extreme Programming
CI - Continuous Integration
ScrumMy old friend Muhuk has written a nice follow-up on this topic here - many good points, be sure to check it out! Also be sure to read my “update” to this - Here’s my more current article. I’d be glad to hear your opinion, feedbacks and probably huge list of things I’ve missed here! Thank you for reading this article.

How to make money online with adf.ly

What is Adf.ly?

Adf.ly is an URL shortening service, such as bit.ly and goo.gl but with one little twist, you can make money from every link you create! Today there are plenty of websites out there that gives you the opportunity to shorten your links in order to make them more appealing or to hide where the link actually leads. However, there are only a few of them that you can make money online from and adf.ly is one of the best for just that. Later on in this article I will show you some the different ways that you can use to make money with adf.ly. While adf.ly is a great website you will most likely not make enough money from it to quit your day job, though it can build up over time and provide you with that money you need to start up your bigger projects online.

How does adf.ly work?
Adf.ly is simply a link shortening service that serves ads in every link that you create. For every ad in your links that someone sees you will make money. The ad shows for 5 seconds before you can click “skip ad” and continue to the links destination. The amount of money you make is about $0.5 to $4.7 per thousand views as I’m writing this article. Below are some ways on how to make money online with ad.ly.
Displaying interstitial ads
Displaying interstitial ads in your links is the highest paying alternative. If you shrink a link with an interstitial advertisement in it people will see full screen advertising before they can continue to the links destination. The advertisement lasts for 5 seconds before the alternative of skipping it becomes available for the viewer.
Using a framed banner
Using a framed banner is a less “painful” alternative for everyone that clicks on your link. This is because the ad will not take up the whole screen; instead it will only show a banner at the top of the browser. However, you will not make as much money with this alternative as you would have done by using interstitial ads.
Full page scripts
Even though I’d advice not to use full page scripts it is still a service offered by adf.ly. Full page scripts is a code snippet that you place in your websites code to change all of your links to adf.ly links. Doing so will make your users have to watch an ad every time they click on a link at your website. Sure, if you have thousand of visitors per day you can make some money with this, but you will most likely piss of everyone trying to browse your website.
Get referrals to do the hard work
If you do not want to do the hard work yourself then get some “slaves” to do the work for you. Adf.ly has a referral program that grants you 20% of your referrals earnings for life. So if you’re a famous person or has a great way to get referrals online this is for you. If you get about 100 referrals that are all making about $1 per month this will automatically get $20 per month without any work. It may not seem like a lot but money quickly adds up and if you have any good idea on how to get people to click on your own links you could be earning well over $50 per month simply by creating links. If you run a website or blog you could simply put up one of their banners on your site and if anyone clicks on them and signs up you will get a referral.

Making money with Adf.ly
Finally I’m getting to the point! I suppose you mainly came here to get ideas on how to make money with adf.ly and therefore I am going to list a few ways that I made my first $50 with when I used adf.ly.
Post on forums
If you know how a forum works then you will also know that there are plenty of forums out there that gets millions of views every month with hundreds of thousands members. Let’s say you know where to fins great Photoshop graphics, so you sign up with a design forum. You then create an adf.ly link to these graphics (it could be anything from Photoshop brushes to logo designs). Then you cleverly create a thread on the forum saying something like “Free logo designs for your website” with a little bit information and maybe some pictures of the logos inside. Then you place your Adf.ly link in the thread and say that they can download them from that site. If you do this actively you can get thousands of clicks on your links each day. This can be done in various forums, as long as you have something that the rest of the users want, for example eBooks, software, videos and so on.
Create videos on YouTube
YouTube is a great way to make money online and it even works with Adf.ly in some cases. If you know how to make videos you could create a video about a new software or song and then simply say that the link to download it is in the description. Since the video will most likely constantly get traffic you can duplicate this process and create many videos. In the end you might get thousands of clicks on your links every day on autopilot. And the more videos you upload, the more money you will make.
Everyday linking to things
If you’re active at websites such as twitter, facebook or similar websites you can easily make some money online from them. In the end, the more links you create the more you will earn, just post them on highly trafficked websites. The links will most likely stay forever and you will earn residual money from them forever. Though, you should not overdo this, putting links in instant messenger chats gives little to no money and only wastes time for you and the one clicking the link.

Great extra features of Adf.ly
Adf.ly is a great website and there are some things that make it this great. One of those things is the interface it has, it’s simple to navigate and understand even for new users. Adf.ly also has a forum where you can talk with admins and other members; this is a great way to see that the website is not a scam. When you create a link with their service you can use one of the worlds shortest URL’s: u.bb and 9.bb, so you’re not just limited to using the adf.ly shortening. You also get very detailed statistics from every link you create, such as the earnings, amount of clicks and from where in the world someone clicked on your links. But the best thing is that the payout is as low as $5, this means that you can reach your payout limit easily if you just put some effort in spreading your links online.

Viswaroopam’s national release successful

LUCKNOW/NEW DELHI/MUMBAI: Barring stray protests by some Muslim organisations, Kamal Haasan’s film Vishwaroopam, titled Vishwaroop in Hindi opened on a peaceful note in cinema halls and multiplexes of Uttar Pradesh today.

UP IG (law and order) B P Singh said the screening of the film across the state was by and large peaceful. He said there were no major protests and those which took place were peaceful.

To compound the issue, confusing signals had come from the Samajwadi Party. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had avoided giving a direct response on the banning of the film by maintaining that any decision will be taken only after viewing the film.

Vishwaroop has been given three to four shows per day in the 18 odd screens that DT Cinemas have in Delhi and there have been no disruptions in the screenings.

In Mumbai and parts of Maharashtra, Vishwaroop sailed through smoothly irrespective of threat by some Muslim organisations to move Bombay High Court to stop the release until Haasan deletes the scenes allegedly derogatory to Islam.

Haasan, who was in Mumbai yesterday to promote the movie said: “Why should I make a film, which is meant to entertain and engage, to show Muslims and Islam in poor light.” He thanked the movie fraternity in Mumbai for backing him. The film is running in Karnataka, Kerala and Andhara Pradesh.

Vishwaroop released today along with Deepa Mehta’s Midnight’s Children and Bejoy Nambiar’s David. sns & pti.
